Federal Immigration Policy Update

Federal Immigration Policy Update

The U.S. Department of State has announced an indefinite pause on the issuance of immigrant visas for citizens of 75 countries, effective January 21, 2026.

What This Means

  • The pause applies only to immigrant visas issued at U.S. embassies and consulates abroad, including:
    • Family-based immigrant visas
    • Employment-based immigrant visas
  • Nonimmigrant visas are not affected, including:
    • Tourist visas
    • Student visas (F-1)
    • Work visas (such as H-1B)

Application Status

  • Visa applications and interviews may continue during this period.
  • However, no new immigrant visas will be issued while the pause remains in effect.
  • Immigrant visas already issued remain valid and will not be revoked.

Community Impact

This policy disproportionately impacts Muslim, Arab, African, and Global South communities, resulting in:

  • Indefinite family separation
  • Employment uncertainty
  • Emotional and financial hardship

While limited exemptions may exist, many families and workers face prolonged uncertainty.

Our Concerns

Policies like this contribute to discrimination and systemic exclusion, often under the guise of immigration enforcement, and undermine fundamental principles of family unity and fairness.

What You Can Do

  • Stay informed about ongoing immigration and visa policy changes.
  • Prepare documentation and plan proactively.
  • If you may be affected, consider speaking with a qualified immigration attorney to understand your options and protect your rights.
