Protest Prepared: CAIR-AZ Protest Safety Guide

Important Note for Non-Citizens: If you are NOT a U.S. citizen, whether undocumented, on a visa, green card holder, asylum seeker, or in removal proceedings, you should strongly reconsider protesting in person right now.

  • Law enforcement and immigration agencies can share data, and even a peaceful arrest or public identification can lead to immigration consequences, including detention or deportation.
  • ICE has previously used protest footage and arrest records to target individuals.
  • Instead, consider supporting the movement in safer ways:
      • Volunteer behind the scenes
      • Assist with digital organizing
      • Donate or fundraise
      • Educate others in your community
      • Recruit others who can protest safely

Before the protest: secure your identity

  • Cover your face with a plain mask, sunglasses, or hat to avoid facial recognition.
  • Avoid unique clothing, wear nondescript, solid colors with no logos, slogans, or identifying patches.

Phone Safety (Best: Leave It at Home)

If you must bring a phone:

  • Use a burner phone (cheap prepaid device not linked to your name).
  • Or, harden your personal phone:
    • Set a strong alphanumeric passcode.
    • Turn off Face ID/Touch ID to prevent forced unlocking.
    • Enable airplane mode and disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.
    • Delete sensitive apps and data you don’t want to risk.
    • Use encrypted messaging apps like Signal.
    • Log out of social media or use it via browser in private mode.

Prevent Tracking

  • Turn off all location services on your phone.
  • Don’t use digital payments (Apple Pay, credit cards, etc.) near protests. Use cash.
  • Cover device cameras when not in use.
  • Disable Bluetooth and NFC, which can be used to track proximity to other devices
  • Avoid scanning QR codes or connecting to public Wi-Fi.

Clean Your Digital Footprint

  • Set your social media profiles to private.
  • Delete or hide protest-related posts/photos.
  • Use a nickname or handle online, not your real name.
  • Remove your info from data brokers (e.g.: joindeleteme.com)

Prepare for the worst

  • Write legal support numbers on your arm
  • Don’t carry anything with identifying info unless absolutely necessary
  • If arrested say:

“I am invoking my right to remain silent. I want a lawyer.”

  • Never unlock your phone or give your password to law enforcement.
