CAIR-AZ Welcomes DOJ Probe into ASU Police Hijab Removals During Protest Arrests

(PHOENIX, AZ, 10/31/2024) – The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-AZ), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today welcomed an investigation by the Department of Justice into whether Arizona State University police violated the civil rights of four women whose hijabs were removed by officers during their arrest at a pro-Palestinian protest in April.

DOJ investigating ASU, MCSO for removing women’s hijabs

Back in April, video surfaced showing ASU police officers removing a woman’s hijab during an arrest, with reports indicating this happened to at least four women during campus protests. CAIR-AZ is looking into the incident.

In a statement, CAIR-AZ Executive Director Azza Abuseif said:

“CAIR-Arizona welcomes the Justice Department’s investigation into what is clearly a violation of the First Amendment’s guarantee of religious freedom for all Americans. CAIR-Arizona has met with the DOJ several times, urging them to investigate not only the recent incident at ASU where a hijab was forcibly removed, but also similar incidents reported across the state. We are hopeful that this investigation will lead to a change in ASU police policy, allowing individuals to keep their religious articles on during processing.”

She noted that CAIR-AZ condemned ASU police after the incident happened.
