CAIR-AZ Expresses Concern as Israel’s General Consul Set to Address Legislature in Closed Session Amidst Calls for Ceasefire

(PHOENIX, AZ, 4/2/24) – The Arizona chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Arizona), is deeply concerned by the decision to allow Israel’s General Consul to address the legislature in a closed session this Wednesday, April 3rd, at 11 am. This scheduled speech, especially in the wake of a recent visit by 17 lawmakers from the House to Israel during the ongoing session, raises serious questions and is perceived by many as an act that is fundamentally anti-Palestinian.

The timing of this address underscores the urgency surrounding the ongoing conflict and the pressing need for a lasting ceasefire. As tensions continue to escalate, there is a growing call for diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the violence and genocide that has plagued the region.

In a statement, CAIR-Arizona Executive Director Azza Abuseif said:

“I am deeply troubled by the lack of transparency surrounding the closed session with the Israeli Consul at the state legislature. It is unacceptable that such discussions are shielded from the general public, particularly when the stakes are so high. We urgently need a ceasefire resolution to halt the senseless violence and prevent further loss of life. It is disheartening to witness the apparent disregard for Palestinian lives displayed by so many lawmakers.”
