The Council on American Islamic Relations - Arizona Chapter is proud to announce its 2014 Banquet!

This great event will take place on Sunday, 11/9/14 - at Hilton Phoenix-Mesa.  Doors open at 5:30pm.

This year's event will be "Rooted in Faith - Growing Through Service" - which is a reflection of our dedication to the Arizona community through our civil rights and advocacy work.  So far, we have a great lineup of confirmed speakers:

Altaf Husain, MSW, PhD - Vice President, ISNA:

Altaf  is a native of Cleveland, Ohio , and a double alumnus of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland , Ohio , having earned his B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and his M.S. in Social Work. He received his Ph.D. in Social Work from Howard University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Husain's research interests include the mental health and integration of immigrant and refugee families, and especially Muslim adolescents, in the United States. He serves on the board of MSA National; as current Vice-President US and former chair of the Leadership Development Committee of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA); and an advisory board member of the Peaceful Families Project -dedicated to the prevention of domestic violence. His past service to the community includes serving as a two-term national president of the Muslim Students Association (MSA National) and an executive committee member of the Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA). Dr. Husain lives in Northern Virginia with his wife Mona and their children, Omar, Ahmed, Asmaa and Hasan.

Tariq Abu Khdeir - This brave teenager gripped the world's conscience during the summer, when Israeli police were caught on video brutally beating him - nearly within inches of his life.  Tariq has emerged as a steadfast, strong voice for standing against injustice.  We are pleased to bring him to Arizona to share his story.

Hassan Shibly - Executive Director, CAIR-Florida:  Hassan has emerged as one of the bright young leaders in the CAIR family, bringing excitement and energy to the civil rights world.  He, along with the CAIR-Florida team were instrumental in bringing Tariq Abu Khdeir's case to worldwide attention - and helped secure his release by Israeli authorities.  Hassan has also assisted in freeing two more American citizens who were detained by Israel during the latest conflict.

Gadeir Abbas - Civil Rights Attorney:  Gadeir has been an integral part of the CAIR family in Washington DC for years - serving on a number of high-profile, groundbreaking cases.  He brings a fresh perspective and great communication style in highlighting the complex challenges our community faces - in a no-nonsense, easy-to-understand style.  We are excited to learn from his great expertise in Arizona.
